GARNET

Garnet has been known for thousands of years, even before our era. It appears in biblical texts under the name carbuncle. Its modern name comes from the Latin granatus, meaning “grain,” in reference to its resemblance to pomegranate seeds. Throughout history, it has been considered the stone of faith, constancy, and truth.

Its deep red hue has fascinated civilizations for centuries. In ancient Rome and Byzantium, it was widely used in rings, pendants, and imperial diadems, while soldiers and nobles wore it as a symbol of resilience and prestige. During the Middle Ages, garnet adorned swords, belts, and religious objects, becoming a mark of status and protection. In the Bible, it is mentioned as one of the sacred stones of the High Priest’s breastplate.

The most notable deposits are found in India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and Brazil, though garnet has been mined since the Bronze Age in Central Europe. In the Czech Republic, red pyrope garnet deposits were heavily exploited from the 16th century to supply the European elite. Today, only the most uniform stones are selected and transformed into timeless, elegant pieces, treasured for their durability and sober brilliance.

In men’s jewelry, garnet is valued for its understated elegance capable of standing out without ostentation. It pairs beautifully with warm metals such as gold or with steel for a more contemporary contrast. Its intense red symbolizes restrained passion, determination, and the strength to overcome challenges.

CARE

Garnet has a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, making it suitable for daily wear. Still, it should be protected from hard impacts and surfaces that might scratch or fracture it. Avoid abrasive products that could dull its shine. To maintain its beauty, clean with lukewarm water and mild soap, dry thoroughly, and store separately from other stones.
