ÓNIX
Onyx is a timeless classic in men’s jewelry, chosen for centuries for its deep, elegant color. In the Roman Empire, it was used for seals, rings, and ornaments that projected authority and respect. Over time, it became a symbol of self-control and sobriety: a stone that does not seek to shine, yet whose mere presence commands character. Those who choose it seek a discreet detail subtle, yet impossible to overlook.
Onyx adorned the seals and rings of Roman and Greek authorities, linked with power and discipline. In the Middle Ages, it appeared in sword hilts and crucifixes, and according to biblical texts, it was part of the High Priest’s breastplate of Israel. In art, it was widely used for cameos and small sculptures, admired for its ease of carving and timeless elegance.
The Romans associated it with bravery, while its name comes from the Greek onyx, meaning “claw.” Ancient Egyptians believed that black onyx helped ward off unhealthy love affairs, preserving emotional balance. According to legend, the gem was born when Cupid clipped the nails of the goddess Venus as she slept and scattered them across the earth; since parts of a divine being could not die, the gods transformed them into a precious stone, later known as Onyx.
Both Roman warriors and samurai chose onyx as a talisman for one reason: calm in the storm. It is the stone of self-mastery, mental endurance, and silent strength. Its deep, matte tone conveys serenity and command. It requires no adornment, no brilliance the presence of onyx alone defines character.
CARE
Onyx has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. While durable, it is sensitive to falls, strong impacts, and prolonged exposure to sunlight, which can alter its deep color. Avoid contact with chemicals and extremely dry or hot environments.
To preserve it, clean gently with a soft dry or slightly damp cloth, and always store it in an individual fabric pouch, separate from other stones.
